Gerontechnology & Silver economy

· EIP-AHA : Christian Boehler is a Scientific Officer at the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), part of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC).

The MAFEIP tool has been developed by DG JRC IPTS in order to monitor the impact of the EIP on AHA towards its objectives. The tool aims to achieve this by allowing stakeholders of the Partnership to perform their own assessment of their respective innovations, through an intuitive web-based user interface that is linked to a database of mortality data and a model that can estimate the lifetime impact of an innovation in terms of quality adjusted life expectancy and health and care expenditure.
This allows not just monitoring the impact of the EIP on AHA towards its overall objectives, which was the original aim of the MAFEIP project, but it enables stakeholders of the Partnership to perform an early and iterative assessment of innovations’ cost-effectiveness at various stages of the development process. With this information, the MAFEIP-tool can be useful for assessing the potential of a new technology, which is important information for developers to decide upon further design, investment, and evaluation; and the EIP on AHA to provide appropriate support for innovations to facilitate faster progress to the next stage of development and / or implementation.
Indeed, one of our case studies to test the MAFEIP tool in the field, conducted in collaboration with the Applied Biomedical Signal Processing and Intelligent Lab of the University of Warwick, UK, demonstrated the potential of an early innovation to predict falls of older people based on physiological monitoring. The results generated by the tool helped the developers to accelerate their discussion with manufacturers on how to translate their disruptive innovation into future clinical practice. Ultimately, this shows that the MAFEIP-tool can be useful not just within the EIP on AHA, but also in other contexts where early assessment of technology may help guiding further development and investment decisions, such as within the newly founded EIT Health.

The use of a wearable camera improves autobiographical memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Woodberry E; Browne G; Hodges S; Watson P; Kapur N; Woodberry K; (Cambridge)

Despite the marked impairment of recent episodic memories in Alzheimer's disease, there have been few attempts to rehabilitate these deficits. We used a novel external memory aid to promote recall of episodic memories in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. SenseCam, a small wearable camera, recorded significant events in the lives of six Alzheimer's disease patients. Every two days for two weeks each patient's memory for an event was assessed, followed by a structured review of the SenseCam images. Longer-term recall was tested one and three months later. A written diary control condition followed the same procedure. Across 40 events the SenseCam review method resulted in significantly more details of an event being recalled over two weeks than the written diary method in five out of the six patients. At three months post event, four out of five patients (one had dropped out) recalled significantly more details of events in the SenseCam condition while the other patient showed no significant difference. Viewing SenseCam images of personally experienced events may significantly improve autobiographical memory in patients with even moderate Alzheimer's disease.

Silver Economy: Ireland Smart Ageing Exchange, interview with Anne Connolly, CEO

ISAX is a recently established and innovative network – “an open and independent platform of industry, academia and government collaborating to accelerate and commercialise innovations for the global older consumer market”. Since we started operating in March 2015, we have built our membership base to 15 founding members, including companies such as IBM, Nestle Skin Care, Home Instead Senior Care as well as 2 universities, 3 Local Authorities and the national health service, HSE. We are also strongly supported by the two key economic development agencies and the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation. ISAX grew out of an earlier entity, the Ageing Well Network, which was established as a time-limited think-tank back in 2006. Its purpose was to create a safe and stimulating environment for leaders across NGOs, government, service providers, business and academia to consider the opportunities and challenges of population ageing and to explore and trial options for how they might be addressed. One of its key legacies was the WHOs Age Friendly Cities and Communities (AFC) programme which is now operational across every Local Authority (municipality) in Ireland through Age Friendly Ireland.
